About the Woods
The Native Range of the Western Juniper (Juniperus occidentalis) reaches its greatest
abundance as extensive and continuous stands in Central Oregon.  When made into Log
Furniture, Western Juniper is the most beautiful and desirable of all the varieties of Juniper.
The heartwood is extremely durable, and richly colored in shades that vary from cream, to light
brown, to deep reddish brown, to chocolate brown.  The rough, short trees have deep bark
inclusions, and many limbs, some are very twisted.  During the pioneer era Western Juniper was
important as firewood, as poles for fences, corrals, and simple shelters.

Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta) Burls are found at high elevations in the High Mountainous
regions of the West.  Globose swellings which may be smooth or rough form on stems or
branches.  Often several swellings are formed in succession along a stem or branch.  Frost or
freeze damage is the common cause of burls in most species, including Lodgepole Pine.  The
many insect trails, holes, and blue staining that occurs in down or standing dead trees provide
the most desirable character for use in Log Furniture.  Lodgepole Pine is stronger and harder
than most other varieties of pine.

Gnarled Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta) limbs are mounted on custom handmade slabs of
Ponderosa (Western Yellow Pine
Pinus ponderosa), Lodgepole Pine (Pinus contorta), or
Burled Lodgepole Pine.  Much time is spent searching for the unique pieces of down or dead
Lodgepole Pine used in our Unique Gnarly Western Lamps.  They are most certainly One-
Of-A-Kind, complete with many insect trails, holes, and sometimes blue staining.  A genuine
Leather Bullwhip is included with most of our Gnarly Lodgepole Pine Lamps.

There is a small tree dotting the American West that Stockmen like to call sweetbrush.  It is
the Mountain Mahogany Tree (
Cercocarpus spp.) .  Contorted twisted branches mark this
tree, giving it a totally unkempt look.  In spite of the trees odd, disheveled image, this very heavy
wood's deep brown color is quite attractive.  It was frequently utilized by Native Americans for
bows.  The Navajos used an extract of its roots as the primary ingredient for a dye to turn their
woolen blankets red.  Short, straight branches, when peeled, were snagless implements for
handling the women's weaving threads.   Louis L'Amour mentions the Mountain Mahogany
often in his vivid descriptions of the American West.

Western Chinquapin (Castanopsis chrysophylla) ( Fagaceae), known as Chinquapin Oak, is a
Native Oregon hardwood in the Beech family, a type of Chestnut.   A tree of the Pacific
Coast region from the Columbia River, along the western slope of the Cascade & Sierra
Mountain Ranges, to the San Jancinto Mountains of California.  It grows abundantly in
Western Oregon.   The wood is hard, heavy, and strong.  Its colors vary from light pinkish
brown to dark chocolate brown.  It was used during the Pioneer era for wagon repairs, and
similar work.  It makes beautiful flooring and furniture.  We use Custom rough cut lumber made of
Chinquapin as bases for some of our smaller lamps.

Red Alder (Oregon Alder Alnus rubra) is the largest of the Alder group.   Found commonly in
thickets along the waters edge in Western North America, extending from Southeastern
Alaska to Southern California.  It is the most common hardwood in the Pacific Northwest.  It's
color ranges from light tan to light brown with a yellow or reddish tint.  We use Custom rough
cut lumber made of Red Alder as bases for some of our smaller lamps.
The Art of Ron Householder
A few words about me and the Rustic Western
Log Furniture I create.  I have been intrigued
with Log Homes for many years, built for myself
and worked in the Handcrafted Log Home
Industry for about 12 years.   One of my most
notable assignments while working for Oregon
Log Homes of Sisters, Oregon, was
Handcrafting much of the Artistic Decorative
Timber Framing for the Porto Cochere of
Disney’s Grand California Hotel.

I never had much interest in Log Furniture until
seeing the fantastic possibilities that the Exotic
Woods of Central Oregon  possess for
creating Rustic Western Log Furniture that
could be Functional as well as Artistic.  I search
for the most unusual, interesting pieces, and do
my best to find & enhance the natural beauty
God has hidden within each one.

Ron's NEW Book
I am Ron Householder.  My wife April & I own & operate Woods
Of The West Gallery.  April & I create all of the furniture pieces
ourselves, without the help of employees.  We find working with
unique wood fascinating and are always amazed at the transformation
that takes place revealing the hidden beauty in each piece.  God’s
natural wonders continually inspire & captivate us.

Since lamps have always been a favorite with our customers, they are
the main focus of our business.  We have thoroughly enjoyed visiting
with the countless very inquisitive nice people who have visited our
booth at the many home shows we have attended.  The same also
applies to the friends & wonderful customers we have become
acquainted with on the internet.  Because we have been asked so
many questions concerning how our lamps are created, we thought
that it was time to write this book.  “Making Artistic Rustic Lamps”
“How To For Fun & Profit“.

I am convinced that no matter where you live on earth, you can find
unique pieces of wood to use in making artistic rustic lamps.

The projects featured in this book have been chosen to illustrate
the techniques that I use for rustic lamp making.  I am a self taught
artist and do not claim that the techniques that I use are right or
wrong.  Simply, these are the same techniques that I have used to
create thousands of rustic furniture pieces.  Apparently folks seem
to like the product that we supply, because we cannot keep up with
demand.

We hope that this book will help you gain confidence in yourself and
that you will be able to apply these techniques to create your own
rustic lamps.  It is 8 1/2 x 11, 86 pages filled with 62 Illustrated
diagrams, 191 Photo Reference Examples including a Before &
After Lamp Photo Gallery, and Detailed Step-By-Step
Instructions for the beginner to the advanced.

You may want to make gifts, fill your own home with elegant lighting,
or start your own business.  Whatever your creative ambitions may
be, we wish you the best of success.
